Chase The Gorilla 5k {Race Recap}

My first race of the season…and it was something special! Saturday morning was not warm but it was sunny and beautiful. I woke up about an hour and half before the race and decided against a pre-race meal because I wasn’t hungry, and SL and I were out the door to pick up Mugsy.

She was nice enough to pick up our race packets before hand so we avoided the chaos inside the YMCA when we arrived at the race.

I was excited to see the shirts because its always fun to get a new race shirt. Despite the awful picture, this shirt IS the same color on the front and the back. Its a size small but SL and I coudl both easily fit in it so I may have to donate it .

We arrived at the race around 8:45 am and lingered until the race promptly started at 9:00. I love when races start on time! SL and Mugsy are both speedier runners than I am but I managed to stay with them through the first mile.

  • Mile 1 – 8:04

Whoa…super fast mile for me! I got a little in my head at this point which is never good for me. My head was telling me I could never keep this pace up and to just let SL and Mugsy go ahead. They did both pull ahead of me some but my legs kept moving.

  • Mile 2 – 7:58

What?!? I did not feel fast at all was totally thinking this was a high 8:00 or low 9:00 mile. I was definitely feeling like there was no way in hell I could keep this pace for the last 1.1 miles. My legs felt heavy and I was thinking that I felt better after running 6 miles last week.

Iv’e run this race 4 times total so I know the course SOMEWHAT. It has a ton of left and right turns but towards the end I always remember where I am. I knew the 3-mile marker was coming up and I felt, well, not great. Not fast.

  • Mile 3 – 8:08

OMG OMG OMG I think I am going to PR I was saying in my head at this point. My personal record for 5k is 8:44 (which I talked about here). As I rounded the final corner and headed into the chute, I could finally see the time clock.

  • FINAL TIME – 25:12 / 8:07 pace

I PRed in my first 5k of the season!! I PRed for the first time in 5 years! Huge day for me!

I could not believe it. I looked back at the finishing arch before finding SL and Mugs who both had amazing races as well (24:16 and 24:29 respectively).

What a great day. I was very proud of myself, SL and Mugsy. We all ran like the wind then treated ourselves to a big breakfast afterwards. Needless to say, I am very happy with the results from my first race of 2014.
