Two Labor Day Parties, Too Few Food Ideas

Labor Day is this weekend and SL and I have two parties to go to. I love the idea of hanging out outside with all of our friends but I never know what to bring. There is a solid chance that both of these parties will have plenty of bags of chips and dozens of unknown creamy type dips but who knows if there will be anything that has any substance to it.

With that in mind I did the only thing I knew what to do for inspiration, I logged onto Pinterest. After a quick “Labor Day” search I found lots of ideas and now I don’t know what to make. Funny, LOTS of recipes were for kabobs, like TONs. Kabobs are fun but are they a little overdone at this point? Not sure.

Here are a few things I am considering making for the weekend.

mexican-cobb-trifle

(This beautiful masterpiece has shrimp, lettuce, black beans, corn, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes and avocado. I would omit the cheese because I don’t like it and that’s how I roll. I think it would be fun to serve something healthy but in a new way.)

watermelon-blueberry-salsa

(I am not sure how people would feel about a fruit salsa but it looks good to me…and hey, if I am the only on who eats it then more for me!)

Patriotic-Puppy-Chow1

(I prefer to call is Muddie Buddies but regardless of the name, this stuff is awesome and I love the red, white and blue twist to this version. This color scheme is not just for the 4th…Memorial Day and Labor Day are just as patriotic.)

Pesto BLT Pasta Salad

(This turned out so good last time I made it and now I have plenty of cherry tomatoes from the garden to use up so this would be perfect.)

fruit kabob flag

(These are cute, but with that said I’m not really a cutesy type person so these are probably a no go for me. I do, however, wish someone else would pay the $20 per container of berries and make these for me to eat!)

spicy vodka lemonade

(Yum! This looks awesome. It would be easy to manipulate the recipe to make a gigantic batch too. This is a contender but I might drink all of it…)

I thought that after writing this post I would know exactly what I wanted to make and bring to both of my parties. I always try to make something I know I will really enjoy just in case everything else at the party is full of dairy because that’s just a no go for me.

I am very much looking forward to having a 3 day weekend and spending the time with friends and  lots of food!

Do you have a go-to dish that you bring to parties?

  1. I really like the Mexican Shrimp Cobb Salad! It is a nice twist!
Lately my friends and I have created food themes for parties so that it is easier for us to figure out what to bring. Our last one was “dips” so the host put the bread/veggies/chips and we all brought different dips. We also did a “sandwich” theme where we brought different ingredients to make the sandwiches or a “color” theme where we only brought food in that color hue. Always so challenging but fun!
