New Workout & Dessert Smoothie

Today started with me getting my butt kicked! I love trying new workout classes and when Mugsy mentioned she was going, I hopped on board. The class was a barre bootcamp class that had me sweating from the first minute. We started with a cardio/strength section then moved to barre. After our barre work we moved to the mat for abs.

I loved this class! It was HARD and I will be sore later. Best kind of pain!

Now, on to the creation I made last night, a frosty dessert smoothie!

I wanted something cold and creamy but wasn’t in an ice cream mood. I love ice cream but I don’t keep it in the house because I would eat it every day. For a lighter but just as awesome summer treat, I came up with this gem.

Blend until smooth…thank me!

*Note on the frozen banana – Peel and slice the banana and put it in a baggie to freeze. My first attempt at freezing a banana didn’t go so well so I’m helping you learn from my mistakes.

Smoothie Kind of Day

I woke this morning at my usually time, 5:15 AM, and I did not feel quite like myself. Today was the first day since I began training that I went back to bed. Normally I would feel super guilty about this but today I knew I needed the extra few hours of sleep.

Game plan for the rest of the day – work from home (and hang out with Curtis), head to the gym in the late afternoon, check back in with work then head to class. But before all of that…it’s smoothie time!

The weather is finally cooperating and now that the polar vortex is gonzo, I can finally enjoy smoothies again! I am on the home stretch when it comes to school and triathlon training and I have been spreading myself a little too thin.┬áIn order not to get sick, I need to be on point with nutrition (and the popcorn I had for dinner last night won’t cut it).

Today’s smoothie had:

  • 1 cups of frozen mixed berries
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 pear
  • 1 1/2 cups of baby spinach
  • roughly 3/4 cup of orange juice (just enough to get everything moving)

Fun facts about today’s smoothie:

  • 313 calories
  • 135% of daily Vitamin C (fending off those colds)
  • 23% of daily calcium thanks to the spinach and my OJ with added calcium*
  • 910 mg of potassium (important for fending off muscle cramps)
  • Is delicious and a perfect way to get a huge bang for your nutritional buck!
  • Tastes best served in a glass you got at your friends’ wedding that you had a blast at!

*It has been found that countries with the high levels of dairy consumption also have the highest level of osteoporosis. Calcium from plants is also easier absorbed by the body than calcium found in animal products. This is good news for this non dairy loving girl!
